(Denver, CO = Alex Walczak) Six officers from the Denver Police Department received awards for their extraordinary kindness and generosity towards the community, as recognized by the nonprofit organization Citizens Appreciate Police (CAP).

On August 12, 2026, the Denver Police Department (DPD) celebrated the commendable actions of six officers who exemplified compassion and generosity in their service to the community. The awards were presented by Citizens Appreciate Police (CAP), a nonprofit organization founded in 1978 by then-Mayor Bill McNichols and District Attorney Dale Tooley. CAP honors officers who go above and beyond their duties, and since its inception, over 550 officers have received this prestigious award, which is the only civilian accolade permitted on police uniforms.

CAP Co-President Christie Mochoruk emphasized the importance of recognizing the dedication of Denver officers. “The kind and generous acts shared today are just a few examples of how Denver Police officers have gone above and beyond in their service to our community. It’s vital to honor those who protect and serve while highlighting their caring nature and professionalism,” she stated.

Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas expressed pride in the awarded officers, stating, “These acts of kindness and generosity during stressful calls do not go unseen and demonstrate our commitment to help and support our community. We are grateful to the Citizens Appreciate Police Board for recognizing these officers and their love for the community they serve.”

Among the honorees, Officer Jesus Hernandez and Officer Steven de Mata responded to a law violation report in District Two. Upon arrival, they discovered a father of five young children who had recently lost his job. Moved by the family’s situation, the officers checked on the children and learned about their limited food supply. They took it upon themselves to purchase groceries for the family, leaving the father deeply grateful for their unexpected kindness.

Technician Monique Cabrera also made a significant impact when she learned that a senior community leader was facing a family medical emergency. Without hesitation, she reached out, gathered a list of groceries, and delivered them to the family’s home, refusing any payment for her generosity. “I cherish the opportunity to positively impact my beloved community,” Cabrera remarked.

Officers Andrew Ohlen and Cory Kreutzer were recognized for their efforts in locating two missing juveniles with developmental disabilities. After receiving a request for assistance, they expanded their search area and found the children in a dangerous situation on the highway. Through patience and empathy, the officers built trust with the juveniles, ensuring their safe return home while also providing them with food to ease the situation.

Lastly, Officer Lauren Flores assisted a single mother and her two teenage daughters after a vehicle crash. She invited them into her patrol car for safety and learned about their struggles with housing. After the incident, Officer Flores took the family to a nearby restaurant for lunch and provided them with information on additional resources.

These awards highlight the vital role police officers play in fostering community bonds and serving beyond mere law enforcement, reinforcing the message that compassion is an integral part of their duty.
