(Washington = Alex Walczak) Aimer Alberto Alvaran Posada, a senior figure in Colombia’s notorious Clan del Golfo cartel, received a 150-month prison sentence for his role in a major cocaine trafficking conspiracy, the U.S. Justice Department announced on July 28, 2026.

Alvaran Posada, 52, played a pivotal role within the Western Bloc of Clan del Golfo, a powerful paramilitary and transnational criminal organization designated by the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist in December 2025. The cartel funds its operations primarily through cocaine trafficking.

Court documents reveal that in 2018, Alvaran Posada conspired with other cartel members to produce 500 kilograms of cocaine intended for sale to Mexican buyers, fully aware that the drugs were destined for the United States. He secured approval from the Northern Bloc commander to facilitate the transaction and led multiple coordination meetings. Authorities seized approximately 363 kilograms of cocaine during the investigation.

At the time, Alvaran Posada was reportedly being considered for promotion to commander of the Western Bloc by former Clan del Golfo leader Dairo Antonio Úsuga David. This role would have granted him extensive control over subordinates, pricing authority, and oversight of cocaine production and transport within the territory. However, he was arrested in 2021 on U.S. charges, extradited, and pleaded guilty to cocaine trafficking conspiracy on August 27, 2025.

The case was prosecuted by the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, specifically the Money Laundering, Narcotics and Forfeiture Section (MNF), with critical investigative support from the FBI Miami Field Office, Colombian National Police, and U.S. legal attachés in Bogotá. Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva and FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge Brett Skiles jointly announced the sentencing.

MNF focuses on dismantling drug cartels by targeting their financial networks and leadership. This prosecution is part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative, established under Executive Order 14159, which coordinates interagency efforts to combat criminal cartels, foreign gangs, and human trafficking organizations operating domestically and abroad. The HSTF prioritizes cases involving child trafficking and aggressively pursues the removal of violent foreign criminals from the U.S.

Alvaran Posada’s conviction underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to disrupting international drug trafficking networks and holding their leaders accountable. It sends a clear message that the financial and operational infrastructure of organizations like Clan del Golfo will face relentless legal pressure moving forward.
