Denver Police to Intensify Enforcement on Expired Vehicle Registrations

(Denver, CO = Alex Walczak) Starting August 23, the Denver Police Department will ramp up enforcement of expired vehicle registrations and temporary license plates in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies.
Denver – August 18, 2026 – The Denver Police Department (DPD) has announced that from August 23, it will work alongside regional law enforcement partners to crack down on violations related to expired vehicle registrations and temporary license plates. Vehicle owners are strongly encouraged to complete their registrations to avoid a $95 fine under Denver Municipal Code.
This enforcement initiative aims to focus on expired vehicle registrations and temporary license plates. Vehicle owners can find information about registering or renewing their vehicles on the Denver Motor Vehicle website. Newly purchased vehicles must be registered in person at DMV offices, while renewals can be completed online or at kiosks. It’s important to note that while there is a 30-day grace period for expired vehicle registrations, temporary license plates do not have any grace period.
The DPD is implementing this enforcement as part of its low-level traffic stop policy, which was adopted in May 2024. This policy allows officers to concentrate on serious traffic violations that can lead to accidents, such as speeding, reckless driving, and running red lights. Lower-level offenses, like expired registrations, typically do not warrant traffic stops unless officers suspect the driver is involved in a serious crime.
A DPD spokesperson stated, “This enforcement is designed to enhance traffic safety and encourage compliance with the law among citizens.” They emphasized that completing vehicle registrations in advance can help drivers avoid unnecessary fines.
The DPD hopes this initiative will promote traffic safety and foster a culture of law compliance among residents. Vehicle owners are urged to take this opportunity to check their registrations and take necessary actions.
