Denver Summit FC Crushes Racing Louisville 6-1, Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

(Centennial, CO = Won Jeong) Denver Summit FC delivered a commanding performance in its final home match of the inaugural 2026 NWSL season, overwhelming Racing Louisville FC 6-1 at Centennial Stadium on Saturday night to keep its postseason aspirations alive.
The victory improved Denver’s record to 11-10-8 (41 points), while Louisville fell to 7-19-3 (24 points).
With six goals on the night, Denver increased its season total to 53, surpassing the North Carolina Courage for the most goals scored in the league this season.
The total also tied North Carolina’s 2018 mark for the third-most goals in a single NWSL season. Denver matched the league’s single-game scoring record for the second time this season, further establishing itself as one of the league’s most dangerous attacking teams.
-Flint Opens Scoring as Denver Dominates First Half-
After a relatively quiet opening stretch, Denver broke the deadlock in the 19th minute.
Co-captain Janine Sonis sent a cross into the penalty area, where midfielder Tash Flint found space and fired the ball into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The opening goal sparked Denver’s attacking momentum as the Summit began applying consistent pressure through aggressive pressing, effective possession and quick transitions.
Denver doubled its advantage in first-half stoppage time when defender Kaleigh Kurtz rose to meet a free kick delivered by Sonis, directing a header past the Louisville goalkeeper.
The goal was Kurtz’s first since joining Denver and her first in NWSL competition since April 2025, when she scored for North Carolina against Kansas City.
The Summit controlled the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Louisville 9-1 and holding nearly 60 percent possession — its highest possession percentage in any half this season.
Denver entered halftime with a commanding 2-0 lead.

-Three Goals in Nine Minutes Put Match Out of Reach-
Denver’s attacking intensity increased after the break.
In the 59th minute, midfielder Melissa Kössler received a pass from Yazmeen Ryan that slipped through the Louisville defense and finished clinically to extend the lead to 3-0.
The goal was Kössler’s eighth of the season, moving her into a tie for second on the team’s scoring chart. Ryan earned her sixth assist of the campaign.
Seven minutes later, co-captain Lindsey Heaps added Denver’s fourth goal, finishing a pass from defender Natalie Means in the 66th minute.
Heaps continued her impressive late-season form, recording her fifth goal in four matches. She has now contributed to eight goals over her last seven appearances, emerging as a crucial attacking presence during Denver’s playoff push.
The Summit struck again in the 68th minute.
Kössler provided the assist as Flint completed her brace, marking the first multi-goal game of her NWSL career.
Denver had scored three goals in just nine minutes, effectively putting the contest beyond Louisville’s reach.
Racing Louisville managed to pull one back in the 79th minute when Taylor White converted a pass from Lauren Milliet, denying Denver a clean sheet.
However, the visitors’ celebration was short-lived.
Just two minutes later, substitute Olivia Thomas set up Ryan, who finished Denver’s sixth goal of the evening in the 81st minute.
It was Ryan’s first goal since September 6 against Gotham FC and Thomas’ third goal contribution off the bench this season.
The final whistle confirmed a resounding 6-1 victory for the home side.

-Ruthless Finishing Highlights Denver’s Attacking Efficiency-
Denver’s offensive dominance was reflected in the match statistics.
The Summit registered 20 shots, including seven on target, converting six of those opportunities into goals.
Louisville, meanwhile, managed just six shots, with only one on target.
Denver also controlled 59.6 percent of possession compared with Louisville’s 40.4 percent, while earning six corner kicks to the visitors’ four.
The hosts demonstrated an ability to create scoring opportunities through multiple attacking approaches.
In the first half, Denver capitalized on crosses and set pieces, while its second-half goals came largely through quick passing combinations, intelligent off-ball movement and well-timed runs behind the defensive line.
Sonis was instrumental in organizing the attack.
Her two assists marked the first multi-assist performance of her NWSL career, bringing her season total to 20 goal contributions — the third-highest mark in the league.
Kössler and Ryan each finished with a goal and an assist, while Flint’s two-goal performance highlighted Denver’s attacking depth.
The six-goal outburst was the team’s sixth match this season with at least three goals, trailing only Angel City and Kansas City in that category.

-Playoff Destiny Comes Down to Decision Day-
Despite the emphatic victory, Denver still faces a difficult path to the postseason.
The Summit cannot secure a playoff berth on its own results alone.
To claim the final available playoff spot, Denver must defeat the North Carolina Courage on the road on November 1.
At the same time, the Orlando Pride must defeat Seattle Reign FC.
If both results go Denver’s way, the Summit will finish with 44 points and move ahead of Seattle to claim the final postseason berth.
Although Denver has demonstrated elite offensive capabilities throughout its inaugural campaign, defensive lapses and dropped points in close matches have prevented the club from securing a playoff position earlier.
The victory over Louisville showcased the team’s attacking potential, but the final regular-season match will demand more than offensive firepower.
Denver will need to maintain defensive discipline, manage possession effectively and capitalize on its scoring opportunities against a challenging North Carolina side.
Regardless of the final outcome, the Summit has already made a significant impression in its inaugural NWSL campaign.
Leading the league in goals while remaining in playoff contention until the final week represents an encouraging foundation for the expansion franchise.
After closing its inaugural home schedule with six goals and a statement victory, Denver now heads to North Carolina with one final opportunity to turn its remarkable first season into a historic playoff appearance.
