Denver Summit FC Stumbles in 3-0 Home Defeat to Kansas City Current

(Commerce City, CO = Won Jeong) Denver Summit FC faced a difficult night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park this past Friday, falling 3-0 to the Kansas City Current in the two clubs’ first-ever meeting in Colorado. Despite a vibrant atmosphere created by a sold-out crowd of 16,833 fans, the expansion side struggled to find its rhythm against a clinical Kansas City attack.
Seeking a fresh approach after the summer break, Denver head coach Nick Cushing implemented significant adjustments to his starting XI. Forward Ally Brazier and midfielder Emma Regan returned to the lineup, and in a notable tactical shift, Co-Captain Janine Sonis was moved from her usual defensive post to the front line. While the move aimed to spark the offense, Sonis remained a constant presence throughout her 90 minutes of play, leading the team with 88 touches and maintaining a 75% passing accuracy. Despite her efforts and a single shot on target, the Summit’s offensive unit was unable to break down the Current’s defense.
The burden of keeping the match competitive fell on goalkeeper Abby Smith, who continued her impressive form throughout the night. Smith recorded five saves, tying her second-highest total of the season and further cementing her status as the league leader in goals prevented, with a total of 6.0 this year. However, despite her heroics between the posts, the Denver defense eventually succumbed to pressure. After conceding the opener to Michelle Cooper in the 35th minute, the Summit held firm until late in the second half, when Cooper struck again in the 81st minute, followed by a final goal from Temwa Chawinga in the 87th minute.

Kansas City’s victory was defined by clinical finishing and sustained pressure that forced errors from the Denver backline, evidenced by a yellow card issued to defender Eva Gaetino early in the match. The Summit, who have maintained the league’s highest average attendance this season at 28,436, were unable to reward their faithful supporters with a result, ending the match scoreless.
With this loss marking the start of a demanding three-match homestand—the club’s longest of the year—Denver Summit FC faces an immediate need to re-evaluate its tactical cohesion and finishing efficiency. As the team looks to recover from this setback, the focus will shift to correcting the defensive lapses that emerged during Friday’s loss. Cushing’s squad will look to regroup quickly as they aim to regain momentum and solidify their position in the standings during the second half of their inaugural campaign.
