(Washington, D.C. = Won Jeong) Denver Summit FC saw its five-match unbeaten streak in games tied at halftime come to an end Tuesday night, falling 1-0 to the Washington Spirit at Audi Field.

The defeat dropped Denver to 5-6-4 (19 points) on the season, while Washington improved to 10-3-3 (33 points) with its third 1-0 victory of the campaign. A crowd of 15,169 attended the match.

Denver’s defense frustrated one of the NWSL’s top offenses throughout the first hour, holding the Spirit scoreless for 60 minutes. It marked only the fifth time this season Washington had been shut out through the opening half, highlighting the Summit’s disciplined defensive performance.

The breakthrough finally came in the 61st minute, when Sofia Cantore found the back of the net to give the home side the only goal of the evening.

Despite the narrow margin, Denver struggled to generate quality chances in the final third. The Summit managed just one shot on target, tying their season low first set on March 12 against Bay FC. However, Denver remained aggressive in possession, recording 35 touches inside Washington’s penalty area, tied for the second-highest total of the season.

Goalkeeper Abby Smith kept Denver within striking distance with another solid performance, making five saves. It was her fourth match this season with at least five saves, with her season high remaining 10 stops against Orlando on March 20.

Rookie defender Devin Lynch continued her remarkable consistency, becoming one of only two NWSL rookies to start every match this season. Lynch played all but the final six minutes of the contest before being substituted late.

Denver entered halftime tied 0-0 for the fifth time this season and had avoided defeat in each of the previous four such matches. Tuesday’s loss marked the first time the Summit failed to earn points after reaching halftime level, while also representing just the second goal they have conceded in matches that were scoreless at the break.

Denver received three yellow cards during the second half. Ayo Oke was cautioned in the 55th minute, followed by Eva Gaetino in the 79th minute and Natalie Means in the 88th.

The Summit will look to bounce back in their next league match as they continue their inaugural NWSL campaign, while Washington strengthens its position near the top of the league standings.
