Justice Department Launches Unprecedented Fraud Crackdown Across Southeastern U.S.

Federal and State Partners Represented at the 2026 Southeast Fraud Enforcement Partnership Event

(Washington = Alex Walczak) The U.S. Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division announced a sweeping fraud crackdown across seven Southeastern states, targeting schemes involving over $350 million in intended losses. The coordinated federal-state operation marks a significant escalation in efforts to combat fraud in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

On July 30, 2026, the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division revealed a major enforcement initiative spanning Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This unprecedented operation includes 17 cases involving fraud schemes across multiple sectors such as SNAP food assistance, Small Business Administration loans, housing subsidies, and tax fraud, with estimated losses exceeding $350 million.

Since July 4, federal prosecutors have charged 12 defendants linked to schemes causing more than $90 million in losses. To bolster these efforts, new federal-state anti-fraud task forces have been established in North Carolina, Mississippi, and Florida.

Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “Defeating the fraud epidemic in our country requires all-hands-on-deck from our federal and state partners nationwide. Sharing intelligence, data, personnel, and priorities strengthens our ability to identify those stealing taxpayer dollars. When federal prosecutors work alongside state agencies to root out fraud, fraudsters lose and the American people win.”

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson highlighted the operation’s success in uncovering over $20 million in Medicaid fraud and prosecuting six individuals who provided counterfeit employment documents to illegal immigrants, thereby defrauding taxpayers and stealing jobs. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall credited the Trump administration’s commitment to fighting government healthcare fraud for providing the tools and coordination necessary to protect Medicaid and taxpayer funds.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill reported securing more than 100 convictions and $73 million in court-ordered restitution since taking office, praising the federal-state partnership for delivering tangible results. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced the launch of Joint Task Force Vigilance, a first-of-its-kind initiative supported by the Justice Department, U.S. Attorneys, and the FBI to aggressively target fraudsters and scammers.

In addition to enforcement actions, the Fraud Division signed data-sharing agreements with Secretaries of State and Treasurers from the involved states. This collaboration grants access to corporate registration and public benefits payment data, enabling investigators to uncover complex fraud schemes involving shell companies and layered financial transactions. This model is expected to expand nationwide.

Key cases include:
– Northern District of Alabama: Tax preparer Michael Shine filed thousands of false energy tax credit claims, causing $70 million in losses.
– Southern District of Florida: Rajaie Ali and three others engaged in a scheme converting SNAP EBT benefits into cash, defrauding $20 million.
– Northern District of Georgia: Ian Patrick Jackson embezzled $3 million in SBA COVID-19 relief funds.
– Eastern District of Louisiana: Jamie McNamara and co-conspirators billed Medicaid $174 million for unnecessary genetic testing.
– Northern District of Mississippi: Lakieth Fa and others were indicted for fraud-related offenses.

This federal-state partnership in the Southeast is being hailed as a national model for combating fraud. The Justice Department encourages other states to adopt similar cooperative frameworks to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure fair law enforcement. The initiative represents a critical turning point in the fight against fraud across the United States.
