[MLB] Rockies Stun Dodgers with Ninth-Inning Rally for Series Opener Win

[Denver= Ella Kim] Today the Rockies welcomed back the Dodgers to Coors Field for a four game series. With the Rockies on a three game streak and fired up to take a win, and the Dodgers fresh off of sweeping the Padres, today’s game was bound to be a fierce matchup.
The first battle to take place out there today was, of course, on the pitching mound, with Rockies starter Kyle Freeland matched against the highly anticipated Yamamoto from the Dodgers. Though Freeland gave up six hits over four innings, the defense kept themselves sharp, limiting the damage to only two runs scored. This left the score at 2-0 at the top of the second inning with the Dodgers in the lead.

Not willing to be outdone in the first half, however, the Rockies surged forward responding in the top of the third inning. MLB rookie Kyle Karros kicked off today’s momentum with a walk to start the inning. Center Fielder Brenton Doyle followed through with a single hit that took him to second base. Fellow rookie Ryan Ritter singled to bring Karros and Doyle home, tying the score at 2-2.
Both teams remained at a stalemate until the bottom of the 5th, with Alex Freeland hitting a double and bringing Freddie Freeman to home plate, boosting the Dodgers to a 3-2 lead. At the top of the 7th, Ezequiel Tovar homered to right center field to tie the game once again.
Tovar was hot on the Dodger’s heels today, unrelenting as he hit a double in the top of the ninth. Yet another rookie contributed greatly to the win today, with Warming Bernabel hit a single for Tovar to score the winning run.
As the somewhat underdogs of the season, the Rockies have started showing exponential growth as the second half of the year begins. Today’s victory brings the Rockies to their first victory over the Dodgers.
