(Commerce City = Won Jeong) The U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) delivered a complete performance against Japan, closing out the series in emphatic fashion.

The United States secured a 3-0 victory over Japan on April 17 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. While the match remained tightly contested through the first half, the outcome was decided shortly after the break as the U.S. attack came to life.

From the opening whistle, the United States controlled the tempo of the match. Holding 70% possession, the Americans applied constant pressure and recorded nine shots in the first half.

Led by Rose Lavelle’s set pieces and dynamic wing play, the U.S. created several dangerous opportunities. Sophia Wilson unleashed a powerful strike, while Claire Hutton rattled the crossbar. However, Japan goalkeeper Chika Hirao made key saves to keep the score level at halftime.

The breakthrough came just three minutes into the second half.

Off a corner kick, Kennedy Wesley headed the ball into the danger area, where Naomi Girma finished with a decisive header to open the scoring. The goal marked Girma’s third international goal.

Following the opener, the U.S. attack grew increasingly sharp.

In the 56th minute, Rose Lavelle doubled the lead after receiving a penetrating pass from Trinity Rodman. Lavelle calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper, recording her 29th international goal and extending her streak to 10 goal contributions in her last 10 matches.

Just seven minutes later, the U.S. struck again from another set piece. Substitute Jaedyn Shaw delivered a precise cross, and Kennedy Wesley finished with a composed touch to seal the victory. Wesley recorded one goal and one assist, earning Woman of the Match honors.

Defensively, the United States was equally solid.

Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey made three saves to secure the clean sheet. The shutout marked the team’s eighth in its last 10 matches, highlighting its defensive consistency.

The match also held special significance for Colorado natives. Lindsey Heaps made her 176th international appearance, tying for 18th all-time in U.S. history, while Sophia Wilson returned to action in front of her home crowd.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Wesley emerged as a rising contributor, recording both her first international goal and assist.

Ahead of the match, head coach Emma Hayes emphasized “precision in the final third.” While the finishing lacked in the first half, the U.S. executed that objective perfectly by scoring three goals within a 20-minute span in the second half.

With the victory, the United States concluded the three-match series against Japan with its most complete performance.
