Colorado Rallies Back to Edge Pirates in Thriller at Coors Field

(Denver, CO = Won Jeong) The Colorado Rockies kicked off their three-game home series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a thrilling come-from-behind victory at Coors Field on Friday.
Starting pitcher Kyle Freeland hit a significant career milestone in the game, surpassing 1,319 innings pitched for the Colorado Rockies. By reaching this mark, Freeland etched his name in the franchise record books as the team’s all-time leader in innings pitched. Throughout his outing, Freeland relied heavily on his signature four-seam fastball and knuckle curve.

The Rockies opened the scoring in the early innings. Willi Castro drove home Ezequiel Tovar with a sharp single to right field, giving Colorado an early 1-0 lead. In the fourth, prospect Rumfield extended the lead to 2-0 with a towering solo shot, driving an inside low slider over the right-field wall.
The momentum shifted in the eighth inning. The Pirates’ offense came alive, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead. The rally was sparked by shortstop Jared Triolo, who doubled to score Esmerlyn Valdez. Shortly after, Bryan Reynolds delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Following a pitching change, Jared Hill surrendered a run on a deep fly ball, allowing the Pirates to edge ahead.
However, the Rockies answered back in the bottom of the eighth. Manager Warren Schaeffer sent Braxton Fulford to the plate as a pinch-hitter, and the move paid off. Fulford delivered a clutch two-run double, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and putting Colorado back on top, 4-3.

In the ninth, Antonio Senzatela took the mound to close the game. Despite loading the bases, Senzatela regained his composure to strike out Tyler Callihan and then induced a game-ending double play off the bat of Jared Triolo to secure the victory.
In his post-game interview, Manager Schaeffer pointed to the eighth-inning rally as the turning point. “Fulford’s swing was the difference-maker,” he noted, praising the pinch-hitter’s performance.
Freeland also reflected on his outing, explaining his strategic use of the knuckle curve. “Even though it can irritate the blister on my finger, the sharp drop was effective in getting hitters to chase,” Freeland said, highlighting his determination on the mound.
The Rockies and the Pirates will continue their series with the second game scheduled for Saturday evening.
