(DENVER = Won Jeong) The Colorado Rockies made a major organizational move on Thursday, officially naming Josh Byrnes as the club’s new general manager. Byrnes will oversee all aspects of baseball operations and will report directly to President of Baseball Operations, Paul DePodesta.

“We are incredibly excited to bring Josh into our group,” DePodesta said in the announcement. “Few executives in baseball share his combination of intellectual curiosity, breadth of experience, and on-field successes. We are extremely fortunate to add him, as he immediately strengthens our entire baseball operation.”

■ Architect of Three Dodgers World Series Titles

Byrnes arrives in Denver with one of the most decorated front-office résumés in the sport. For the past 11 seasons, he served as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations, overseeing scouting and player development while contributing to three World Series championships.

His leadership experience includes two previous general manager posts within the National League West:

San Diego Padres GM (2011–14) Arizona Diamondbacks GM (2005–10)

Before his GM roles, Byrnes served as assistant general manager for both the Boston Red Sox (2003–05) and the Rockies (1999–2002). He began his front-office career with Cleveland in 1994 and later worked alongside DePodesta from 1996–98.

■ “Thrilled to Be Returning to Colorado”

In his statement, Byrnes expressed both gratitude and confidence in the club’s future trajectory.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to the Rockies organization, especially at such an exciting time for the future of the franchise,” he said. “Working alongside Paul again is an incredible opportunity, and I’m eager to get started as we work to bring championship-caliber baseball back to Colorado.”

The reunion between Byrnes and DePodesta is seen as more than a staffing decision—it signals a philosophical reset and a potential overhaul in player development, talent acquisition, and data-driven operations.

■ A Strategic Turning Point for the Rockies

Though the club has struggled to keep pace in a competitive NL West landscape, the addition of Byrnes is widely interpreted as a commitment to systemic restructuring and long-term roster improvement. With his unique blend of scouting expertise, analytics-driven strategy, and winning background, Byrnes is expected to reshape the organization’s approach at every level.

A native of Washington, D.C., Byrnes starred at Haverford College, setting program records in home runs and RBIs—an uncommon player-to-executive foundation that informs his scouting philosophy.

■ Media Availability Scheduled for Dec. 5

Byrnes and DePodesta will address the media via Zoom on Friday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. MT, with a link to be provided by Rockies Communications.
