(Denver, CO = Won Jeong) The Colorado Rockies concluded their three-game home series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 2-1 record, falling 8-6 in the final matchup at Coors Field on June 21. Despite a relentless late-game rally, Colorado was unable to overcome the early lead established by Pittsburgh.

Colorado’s starting pitcher, Michael Lorenzen, kept the game scoreless through the first three innings, showing promise early on. However, the momentum shifted in the fourth inning when Lorenzen surrendered a two-run homer to Nick Gonzales. Lorenzen eventually exited the game in the sixth inning after allowing 4 runs on 7 hits, continuing a difficult stretch that has left him without a win in his last ten appearances.

The Pittsburgh offense continued to capitalize on Colorado’s pitching changes. Relief pitcher Juan Mejia conceded 2 runs in the sixth and a costly three-run homer to Bryan Reynolds in the seventh, extending the Pirates’ lead to 8-1. John Brebbia later took the mound in the eighth, providing a much-needed steady hand by pitching two scoreless innings to keep Colorado’s hopes alive.

The Rockies’ offense finally ignited in the bottom of the eighth. TJ Rumfield sparked the rally with a massive three-run home run, cutting the deficit to 8-4. The pressure mounted in the ninth inning as Kyle Karros drove in Braxton Fulford with a double, and Jake McCarthy followed with an RBI single, narrowing the gap to 8-6.

With the crowd at Coors Field fully engaged, the Rockies looked poised for an improbable comeback. However, with one out and a runner on first, Willi Castro’s hard-hit ball was scooped up by Pirates shortstop Jared Triolo and turned into a game-ending double play.

Despite the loss, the Rockies maintain a positive outlook after securing two wins in the three-game series. The Pirates, meanwhile, relied on efficient middle-inning hitting to secure a hard-fought victory.
