Opera Colorado

(Denver, CO = Wongeol Jeong) This November, Opera Colorado is set to bring a new experience to Denver audiences with its production of Gaetano Donizetti’s beloved comedic opera, Daughter of the Regiment. Marking the first time this vibrant opera will be performed in Denver, the show will be on stage at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on November 9, 12, 15, and 17.

Set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, Daughter of the Regiment tells the story of Marie, a spirited orphan raised by a regiment of soldiers, and her journey as she balances her military family’s expectations and her growing love for Tonio, a civilian. Filled with humor, romance, and unforgettable vocal performances, the opera promises to captivate both seasoned opera fans and newcomers alike.

Making her Opera Colorado debut, soprano Katrina Galka will star as Marie, delivering a performance that combines playful charm with powerful vocal prowess. Galka will be joined by tenor Andrew Stenson, who plays Tonio and will perform the opera’s show-stopping aria, “Ah! mes amis,” known for its notoriously challenging high notes.

The cast is further bolstered by seasoned performers, including Peter Strummer as the tough yet endearing Sergeant Sulpice, Catherine Cook as the authoritative Marquise of Birkenfeld, and Monét X Change, making a special appearance as the eccentric Duchess of Krakenthorp.

Under the direction of Chía Patiño, the production is expected to dazzle with vibrant staging and visually stunning sets. The Opera Colorado Orchestra, conducted by Music Director Ari Pelto, will bring Donizetti’s energetic score to life, adding to the dynamic atmosphere of the performance.

Greg Carpenter, Opera Colorado’s Ellie Caulkins General & Artistic Director, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming production. “As we approach the Denver debut of Daughter of the Regiment, I am filled with excitement to share this vibrant production with our community. It’s a celebration of love, laughter, and resilience that we truly need now more than ever. We’re thrilled to welcome such a remarkable cast to our stage, and I can’t wait for audiences to experience this delightful French bonbon.”

With its mix of comedic elements, breathtaking vocal performances, and a heartwarming story, Daughter of the Regiment promises to be a must-see highlight of the Denver cultural calendar this fall.
