[NHL] AVALANCHE BOLSTER CENTER DEPTH, ACQUIRE STANLEY CUP CHAMPION NICOLAS ROY

(Denver = Won Jeong) The Colorado Avalanche have signaled they are all-in for another deep postseason run, acquiring veteran centerman Nicolas Roy from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In a move announced Thursday, the Avalanche sent a conditional first-round draft pick in 2027 and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2026 to Toronto in exchange for the 29-year-old forward.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 200 pounds, Roy brings a much-needed physical presence to the Avalanche’s middle six. Before the trade, Roy had recorded 20 points (5g/15a) in 59 games with the Maple Leafs this season.
Crucially, Roy arrives as a specialist in the face-off circle. He won 52.9% of his draws in Toronto, a key asset for an Avalanche team looking to control puck possession heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
The acquisition is clearly defined by Roy’s championship pedigree. The Amos, Quebec native was a vital component of the Vegas Golden Knights’ 2023 Stanley Cup championship run, appearing in all 22 playoff games and contributing 11 points.
Roy’s resume is decorated with high-stakes experience:
-
79 Career Playoff Games: 32 postseason points (10g/22a).
-
Calder Cup Champion: Won the AHL title in 2019 with the Charlotte Checkers.
-
International Success: Two-time silver medalist with Team Canada (World Championships and World Juniors).
Roy is not just a depth scorer; he is a decorated defensive forward. During his time in the QMJHL, he was awarded the Guy Carbonneau Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward, showcasing a 200-foot game that translates well to the NHL’s Western Conference style of play.
Having recently skated in his 400th career NHL game last December, Roy brings a blend of durability and veteran leadership to a Colorado locker room that already features several elite stars. His ability to play heavy minutes and kill penalties is expected to alleviate the workload on the Avalanche’s top stars as the playoffs approach.
